The distributor was not looking for a cheaper slide. It was looking for a slide that measured the same in January as it did in July.
Its previous supplier delivered slides that fell within a nominal 25 × 75 mm description, but the actual dimensions drifted between production batches. In a manual laboratory that difference is invisible. In laboratories running automated stainers and coverslippers — which is most of the distributor's customer base — slide racks, grippers and coverslip applicators are built around a narrow dimensional window. Slides that sit a fraction of a millimetre outside it jam, mis-seat or come out of the rack at an angle.
Three requirements followed from that, and the distributor stated all three in its first enquiry:
Batch-to-batch dimensional consistency — not just conformance to a nominal size, but repeatability across production runs.
Packaging that survives sea freight — glass consumables that arrive cracked are a total loss, and a distributor absorbs that loss before its own customer ever sees it.
A delivery cycle it could plan around — the previous supplier's lead times had also been unreliable.
The technical brief was specific. It included a printed surface-identification marking on the adhesion slides, so that laboratory staff could tell which face was treated without holding the slide up to the light. The exact marking is part of the customer's product presentation and is not reproduced here.

The two packing configurations were not a rounding decision. The distributor resells into laboratories with very different throughput, and a standard box count and a smaller non-standard count serve different reorder patterns downstream. Producing both from the same production lot means its customers get the same glass regardless of which pack size they buy. We can quote non-standard box counts on request; we do not publish the specific counts agreed with an individual customer, because an unusual pack size is one of the easiest ways to identify a distributor's supply arrangement from its own catalogue.
We sent five boxes of each product for evaluation. The distributor's own testing covered four things: cell and tissue adhesion performance, staining result, dimensional measurement, and surface cleanliness. Approval came back roughly two weeks after the samples arrived, with no requested modification to the product.
We record that plainly because it is the part of a case study that is easiest to embellish and hardest to defend. There was no iteration loop on this project. The first sample set passed.
Passing a sample test proves one lot is right. The distributor's actual complaint about its previous supplier was that lot two did not match lot one. That is a process control problem, not a sample problem, so the controls we added were aimed at reproducibility rather than at the sample itself:
Dimensional sampling inspection at production. Length, width and corner cut are measured on a sample drawn from each run, against the 25.0–25.5 × 75.0–75.5 mm window rather than against a nominal figure. A slide that measures "25 × 75" on a datasheet and a slide that measures within a stated tolerance band every run are two different products.
Surface cleanliness inspection. Residue, film and particulate on the glass surface affect both adhesion performance and background in staining. This is checked before boxing, not after.
Packaging drop test. Sealed export cartons are drop-tested to validate the pack configuration for LCL sea freight, where cartons are handled individually rather than moving as a single palletised unit.
Alongside the goods we supplied product specification sheets, ISO 13485 certification, test reports and full packing documentation, so the distributor could pass technical questions from hospital procurement to its own file rather than back to us.
This is a full private-label programme. We produced and proofed the customer's logo, colour box, product label and outer carton shipping marks. No Huida or JSHD branding appears anywhere on the packaging that reaches the end laboratory.
Private labelling on a regulated consumable is mostly a documentation exercise rather than a printing exercise: the artwork must carry the correct product identification and the customer's own regulatory particulars, and it has to stay consistent across reorders so that a laboratory receiving its fourth delivery does not have to re-verify what it has bought.

The timeline is given in elapsed weeks rather than calendar dates. The three months between sample approval and purchase order were the customer's, not ours — a distributor changing a slide supplier has to work through its own hospital accounts before it commits to a container. We include that interval because a case study showing only the fast parts of a sourcing cycle is not much use to a buyer trying to plan one.

The distributor authorised publication on an anonymous basis only. Together they would be enough for a competitor to work out which distributor this is, and a customer who is identified through a supplier's marketing does not stay that supplier's customer.
